Art as an Industry

Following the inaugural event held in Armidale planning for four further symposiums in Tamworth (2007), Moree (2007), Inverell (2007) and Quirindi (2008) was completed. This would allow the project to be introduced to artists strategically around the Northern Region. The Armidale event was followed by a detailed survey of the local industry and the results have been collated and released.

In 2007, the Northern Inland Regional Development Board and its partners Arts North West, Department of State and Regional Development, New England Institute of TAFE and the local government Council in each indicated locality conducted one day events in Tamworth (Friday 23 March 2007), Moree (Friday 31 August 2007) and Inverell (Sunday 18 November 2007).

All three symposiums were well attended, featured local, regional and metropolitan based speakers with wide experience in the art industry. This allowed professional as well as amateur artists to reflect on their careers and possible full time employment in the industry.

Survey forms have been distributed in each of the three centres and results will be collated in due course and added to the Armidale survey.

Planning has commenced on the last event to be held in Quirindi and which to be held in the first quarter of 2008.

The Board’s Executive Officer, Don Tydd has been invited by the Department of State and Regional Development to be a guest speaker at the May 2008 Community Economic Development Conference to be held in Moama New South Wales. He will be accompanied by Angus Nivison, a regional artist who has exhibited nationally and interna tionally. Angus was responsible for bringing the idea of an informative symposium to the attention of the Board and its partners.

The project has attracted attention from around the state based on its innovative ideas to create employment and investment as well as provide the regional population with the opportunity to participate in and take advantage off, a regional creative industry.
