Week 15 - How to Start an Etsy Shop – Part 1 – Research

Etsy is a powerful online marketplace for creators of handmade products. The platform has over 28 Million active buyers and 1.7 Million active sellers.

Let me tell you from experience, Etsy’s buyers come to the platform to browse and have a look around on a regular basis.

For some of my friends, it’s nearly an addiction.

This week I’m diving into:

  • Why Etsy? The Pros vs Cons
  • How to Research:
    • What you will sell
    • Your competition
    • Keywords so people will be able to find you

It might not seem like much, but the amount of time and effort you put into the research before you start any business endeavour will be well worth it.

To go along with this week’s videos are two bonuses.

The first is a worksheet you can use as you go through your research.

The second is a checklist of everything you will need before sitting down to setup your Etsy store.

How long will it take?

There are a total of 4 videos ranging from 10 – 20 minutes duration. Of course, you don’t have to watch them all. Take a look at the descriptions and watch the ones that apply to you and skip the rest. In total there are about an hour’s worth of videos in this week’s materials.

Video 1: The Pros and Cons of Etsy

Deciding to use Etsy to trade can come with many bonuses, but you are setting up shop on ‘rented land’ so to speak. Etsy has final control and can close down your store with everything you’ve built. I talk about other pros and cons and potential ways to mitigate some of these cons. Of course, there is no right or wrong answer and the final decision is up to you. These are some things to be aware of.

Video 2: Research before you Start your Etsy Store

In this video I start to show my research process for my potential Etsy store selling prints of my photographs. I show you how to think like a customer, how to search, how to look at your competitors within Etsy – all before you’ve signed up to start selling. Take a look at my Research Worksheet, it will be a good companion to walking you through your own research process. Grab a copy using the form at the bottom of this post.

Video 3: Researching Keywords for your Etsy Store

The research continues but dives deeper into keywords. I make use of a free keyword investigator tool called http://e-t-s-y.com/ which allows you to research before you have an Etsy account. Next week I will show you another option called Marmalead, but it won’t work without an Etsy account.

Video 4: The Etsy Pre-setup Checklist

A list and explanation of everything you will need before you sit down to create your store. Download the companion checklist using the form at the bottom of this post.

What’s up next week?

More Etsy next week. I will demonstrate step by step how to signup and create your store as well as what must be changed as soon as possible to ensure your store and your products rank well in searches.
