Five Local Councils To Benefit From $4 Million Win

Regional Development Australia Northern Inland (RDANI) has welcomed the announcement that five local councils have been successful in their application for $4 million in funding to upgrade the Thunderbolts Way between Gloucester and Uralla under Round Four of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF).

Walcha Shire Council led the successful project consortium, which included support from the Local Government Areas of Guyra Shire, Inverell Shire, Uralla Shire and Gloucester Shire.

Combined with the successful Round 3 projects recently announced in Glen Innes and Inverell, over $5 million will be injected into the Northern Inland for projects under RDAF rounds 3 and 4. Executive Officer, Nathan Axelsson is pleased that the hard work and persistence of the project partners has paid off.

“Thunderbolts Way is a key transport route for the region, with up to 1000 vehicles using the road on a daily basis, 20% of which is heavy vehicle traffic. Anyone who has driven the road in recent times will understand the critical need to upgrade the worst sections and the tremendous long-term benefits this will bring to residents and businesses in the region and beyond.”

“The condition of local roads and the funding required to maintain them is one of the biggest bugbears of local government, so it is a terrific outcome for Walcha Shire Council and the other consortium members. This clearly demonstrates the results that can be achieved when local councils get together for a common purpose.

“The RDANI committee members in particular find it very pleasing to see money injected into the region following on from the detailed assessment process that they were proud to be a part of and wholeheartedly congratulate the successful councils involved,” Mr Axelsson said.

A further and final RDAF round 5 is anticipated to open in the coming months.

“We would strongly encourage local government and eligible not-for-profits to start thinking about projects that will have regional benefit, are innovative and take a collaborative approach in their applications,” Mr Axelsson said.
