Welcome From The Chair

Dear Northern Inlanders,

We Northern Inlanders have a lot to celebrate this month. Glen Innes and Inverell were successful with Round 3 RDAF funding grants. In addition, Armidale has won two National Awards from Keep Australia Beautiful. Congratulations to all involved.

Despite the cooler weather there is still much for us to be excited about. Positive commitments in the recent Federal Budget, see rural and regional Australia remaining a focus, with further funding for projects expected. Don’t miss the Sustaining Rural Communities conference in Narrabri on June 5th and 6th, as well as a number of funding opportunities outlined below.

Last of all, don’t forget to ‘like’ the Come On Inland campaign on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

All the best,

Mal Peters, Chair

Federal Budget Announcements Benefit Regional Areas, Particularly Inverell & Glen Innes

The Federal Budget brought down in early May concentrated on creating infrastructure for faster and safer transport links, as well job protection and creation and support to families.

Locally, Inverell and Glen Innes have been successful in their Round 3 Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) applications to assist in infrastructure development. Inverell will be redeveloping the Varley Oval Sporting Complex which is being co-funded from $500,000 from the Federal Government and nearly $600,000 from Inverell Shire Council.

The Glen Innes Severn Council has been successful in attracting an international flying school to its airport. Together with Council and private sector funding, the Federal funding will be used to upgrade parts of the airport to assist in the flying school getting ‘off the ground’. The NSW Government also announced this week funding of up to $1.6 million for Glen Innes Severn Council to support infrastructure upgrades at the Glen Innes Aerodrome as part of the project.

In addition, the 2013/14 Federal Budget will deliver the region:

  • $80 Million for the New England Highway Bolivia Hill Realignment;
  • $220,000 for the Acacia Park Industrial Estate NBN Fibre Rollout in Armidale;
  • $100,000 for the Inverell RSL Museum;
  • $280,000 for the Ashford Medical Centre;
  • $250,000 for the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM); and
  • $210,000 for the Inverell Linking Together Centre.

Other funding initiatives that will continue with the 2013/14 Budget include:

  • Regional Development  Australia Fund
  • Sustainable Rural Water Use and Infrastructure Program
  • Caring for our Country – Regional Delivery Component
  • National Broadband Network
